My name is Kavita and my 3-year-old daughter, Navya, was born with a hole in her heart. At this very moment, my baby is fighting to stay alive. She’s fighting with every ounce of energy a child can gather.

But the painful truth is, she won’t be able to fight for much longer. She needs help.

3 years ago, I gave birth to my precious Navya. My husband, Puneet & I were thrilled. Puneet runs a tiny stall and earns around ₹6,000 a month.

We never had a lot of money but we had love and hope.

Our dreams came crashing down in October of 2017 when Navya was just 3 months old.

“You dream of the day your child will go to school and make friends. You never imagine that you might have to see her fight for life. How could we live after that?”

I noticed that Navya was looking a pale-yellow in colour and she wouldn’t stop crying so we rushed her to the doctor.

We knew something was wrong but we were completely unprepared for what we were about to find out. Doctors diagnosed my baby with congenital heart disease.

They told us she had a hole in her heart and would need two heart surgeries to survive.

I collapsed, I could not believe what I was hearing. I had just given birth to my baby, how could she be dying? This was not supposed to happen, my baby was supposed to be home with me.

My husband and I knew we could not afford this, even in our wildest dreams. But we were willing to do anything to save her. We begged the family to lend us money and our baby got the first surgery she needed.

Doctors asked us to come back 3 years later for the second surgery.

Over the next few years, we tried our best to save every rupee we had for Navya’s second surgery. We cut down on food, we didn’t buy our other children any new clothes and my husband worked extra-long hours.

Just when it looked like we might have a chance at affording the second surgery, 2020 arrived and the pandemic hit.

My husband lost his source of income and every bit we had saved had to be used to feed and keep our family alive. We had nothing else to sacrifice.

Our baby needs open-heart surgery urgently or she will lose her life.

As parents, we promised we would do whatever it took to keep her safe and happy. Right now, it feels like we’re failing.
